Fee Breakdown

Hidden Fees Nobody Tells You About

Hardware "Deposit" or Rental

$499 or $10/mo

You can buy the dish outright ($499, non-refundable after 30 days) or rent it for $10/mo — but the rental adds up fast and you own nothing. If you buy and service is poor at your address, you lose the deposit after the return window closes.

Taxes & Regulatory Fees

$8–$25/mo

Not included in the advertised price. Varies by state and municipality. Customers in some states report 15–20% added on top of the base rate.

Service Initiation Fee

Up to $50

Charged on the first invoice in some regions. Not shown during the signup flow — appears on the first bill.

Mounting Hardware

$30–$150+

The standard dish comes with a basic ground mount. Roof mounts, wall mounts, and cable routing kits are sold separately and are often necessary for proper installation.

Portability Add-On

$25/mo

Using your dish outside your registered service address requires a portability add-on. Not included in the base plan.

Priority Data Overage

$0.25–$1/GB

On Priority plans, once you exceed your priority data allocation, you are charged per GB or throttled. The threshold is not prominently displayed.

Net result: 21–152% price increase since launch

A customer who signed up in 2021 at $99/mo and is still on service today may be paying $120–$165/mo — with no option to lock in their original rate. Hardware costs have also increased, meaning new customers pay more upfront than early adopters did.

Cancellation

How to Actually Cancel

There is no phone number. There is no email address. Cancellation is app-only, and the process is designed to create friction.

"I tried to cancel for three weeks. The button kept sending me to a survey. I was charged for two more months."

— Reported user experience

  1. 1

Log into the Starlink app (no phone number or email cancellation available).

  2. 2

Navigate to Account → Manage Service → Cancel Service.

  3. 3

Complete the cancellation survey — skipping it may delay processing.

  4. 4

Confirm cancellation — you will be charged through the end of the current billing period.

  5. 5

Ship hardware back within 30 days of original purchase for a refund (not cancellation date).

  6. 6

Monitor your bank statement — multiple users report being charged 1–2 additional months after cancellation confirmation.
